Brunch at 53 Avenue

53 Avenue Cafe is my go to lazy Sunday brunch spot, the major appeal being that it’s just around the corner from my house. On first glance it doesn’t look like much – the giant billboard of Mattress Mick plastered on the wall outside is doing it no favours. However, if you’re brave enough to step inside you’ll find a cosy cafe with exposed red brick walls, comfy seats and friendly staff.

Quick Review

Location: 53 Collins Ave E, Dublin 5

Price:  €5-€11 per brunch item

Recommendations: Croque Madame, Breakfast Salad, Eggs Benedict

Other Tips: If you’re driving there’s very little parking right outside the cafe so you may need to park further up along the side of Collin’s Avenue or around Supervalu.

The brunch menu is simple and reasonably priced with dishes ranging from about €7 to €11. On it you’ll find the usual brunch suspects like eggs benedict, pancakes, omelettes and french toast.

One of my favourite 53 Avenue dishes is the Crocque Madame. This comes on sourdough bread with melted gubeen cheese, bacon and eggs sunny side up. It’s delicious but filling so arrive hungry! You’ll find this dish on the breakfast menu as opposed to the brunch menu but you can order it all day.

Another dish I would recommend is the breakfast salad. Don’t be fooled by the word salad, this is definitely not the healthiest option but it’s yummy. It’s made up of black pudding, bacon ladrons and baby potatoes mixed with salad leaves and house dressing. The best part is that it’s topped with poached eggs and Parmesan cheese – heaven!
